Occ Summary
T he Medical Assistant, Certified functions as an integralmember of theint erdisciplinary healthcare team in providing direct patient care. TheMedi cal Assistant, Certified performs routine administrative and patientcare supportive duties in a Health System medical practicethat assistmedical and/or nursing staff in the examination and treatmentofpatients and ens ure the clinic/office runs smoothly.
Work Performed
Clinical responsibilities:The CMA takes medical histories and records v ital signs, explainstreatment procedures to patients,and prepares patien ts for examinationsand procedures.Patient care support responsibilities may include assisting the medicalandnursing staff during examination an d procedures, collecting andpreparing laboratory specimens, performing b asic laboratory test in theclinic/office, taking electrocardiograms, rem oving sutures/ staples,changing sterile and non-sterile dressings, promoting patient/familyunderstanding of the educationalcontent and his/her i nvolvement in theplan of care, and documenting in the patient record.Oth er clinical support responsibilities include disposing ofcontaminated su pplies, instrument processing, highlevel disinfectionand sterilization of medical instruments, telephoning prescriptions to apharmacy, preparin g and administering medications as directed by aphysician, and authorizi ng drug refills as directed. Performs otherclinicalfunctions as delegated and supervised by the physician.Administrative responsibilities:The CM A greets patients, answers telephones, schedules appointments toinclude arrive appointments in MaestroCare, checkout patients, andreferral sched uling; arranges for hospital admissions and laboratoryservices, updates and files patient medical records, fills out insuranceforms, handles bil ling, bookkeeping to include receiving copays andcollections on account balances; correspondence, and ordering clinicalandclerical supplies and forms. Performs other administrative duties asdirected.May be requested to be a liaison for clinic activities such as JointCommission and falls and/or participate in clinic committees.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Good customer service skills.Work requires the abi lity to understand and follow oral and writteninstructions generally acq uired through a high school education andmedicalassistant programming.He avy lifting and the ability to transport stretcher and wheelchairpatient s may be required.Working knowledge of sterile techniques and special pr ocedures that areapplicable to work performed.Working knowledge of proce dures and techniques involved in administeringroutine and special treatm ents to patients.Working knowledge of sanitation, personal hygiene and b asic health andsafety precautions applicable forwork in a clinic setting . Workingknowledge of infection control procedures and safety precaution s.Age specific competencies.Daily clinic preparation process; registrati on,scheduling, chargeposting, order entry. Able to document and communi cate pertinentinformationAbility to establish and maintain effective wor king relationships withpatients and clinic staffTyping skillsMedical ter minologyLevels II and III --Ability to independently seek out resources andwork collaboratively
