JOB SUMMARY The Cardiac Device Technician will provide thorough, competent interrogations and reprogramming of cardiac devices implanted in patients, including, but not limited to Pacemakers, Implantable Loop Recorders, and Implantable Cardiac Defibrillators. This will include checks done in office as well as remotely monitored patients. They will do initial interrogations, report generation, and documentation in the EMR, as well as bring acute/urgent issues to the attention of the physicians or APP’s. Also input charges into the billing software. Work with other Cardiac Device Technicians to ensure alert thresholds and protocols remain current in the Device Clinic(s).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES – Other duties may be assigned. • Performs device interrogation, interpretation, and reprograms cardiac devices using established protocols set by physicians, working independently. • Performs device interrogation on critical devices and troubleshoots issues and immediately takes steps to resolve problems, working with physician as needed. • Documents device analysis using the EMR and works collaboratively with physicians and other healthcare providers to optimize the device for the patient’s condition. • Notifies the physician or practice manager of the Cardiac Device Technicians of non-routine issues that need to be addressed promptly. • Educate patients and families on the device with regards to what to expect with a device, follow-up care, monitoring, what to do in an emergency, and expectations of the Device Clinic. • Communicate with other members of the healthcare team, including physicians, co-workers, and managers as the condition of the patient changes or the device changes. • Assess post-operative wounds, including performing suture/staple removal. Educate patients and families on postoperative wound care, safety issues with their cardiac device, including high voltage therapies. • Educate and enroll patients in remote monitoring as appropriate in collaboration with the physician and APP’s. • Assist in educating the clinical staff about cardiac devices and what education the patient and family should be given when set up for a device. • Collaborate with all members of NCH Heart Institute team to deliver best quality care to patients with cardiac devices. • Appropriately manages, handles, and documents in the EMR triage phone calls for the Cardiac Device patients and communicates with physician and APP’s as necessary. • Enter charges in the EMR/Billing system for in offices and remote monitoring device interrogations and any reprogramming. • Schedule follow-up appointments for in office and remote monitoring device checks for the patients. • Remote monitoring services to include weekends and holidays for monitoring transmissions and notifying physician/APP on call as necessary. • Contact patients who miss appointments to ensure they are rescheduled promptly. • Rotate to all NCH Heart Institute Device Clinics. • Participate in any future research studies/trials for NCH Heart Institute. • Remain current with new research and devices in the industry.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS • Minimum 2 years experience with checking devices in the industry, such as Biotronics, St. Jude Medical, Boston Scientific, Medtronics, Sorin, etc • One year experience with managing remote device transmissions and remote monitoring downloading of data and transferring to the EMR from Biotronics, CareLink, Latitude, and Merlin systems. • Associate’s Degree or Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) preferred • Current BLS and ACLS from American Heart Association. • Basic computer knowledge: ability to operate a PC, create/save/print documents, input data
